I don’t think a lot of people know that Shopify has a Point of Sale (POS) system. The best known one is probably Square and the one that most people will default to.

If your business plans include online sales as a major channel, it makes sense to strongly consider Shopify’s POS. Shopify’s infrastructure is inherently designed for omni-channel operations, integrating each sales avenue—from physical storefronts to online stores, marketplaces, and social media platforms—under a single, scalable system but more importantly, there’s really no one else that comes close to Shopify’s digital storefront for online conversions and sales.

Shopify eventually recognized the importance of having versatile POS solutions and they’ve upgraded their offerings to include the advanced POS Pro plans in recent years.

Shopify Tap & Chip Reader

Just like Square, Shopify’s POS solutions is centered on its Shopify Tap and Chip card reader which you can use in retail settings. This allows multiple payment options, including tap payments and chip transactions, and syncs with smartphones to facilitate transactions.

Shopify POS Inventory

Shopify provides a streamlined process to integrate both digital and physical sales platforms. This way you can have a unified inventory management system that allows purchase orders. You can also set different authorization levels and manage inventory across your sales channels so that you can certain items available only in-store, online or both. It might not be the very best inventory management system in the world but it works well enough. You can use Stocky on the Shopify App Store.

If you have multiple retail locations, then you’ll need to make sure that you’ve correctly set up your various sales locations and appropriately distributed your inventory across them.

Shopify or Shopify Plus for POS?

This really depends on how much sales volume you’re doing. At some stage, the monthly cost savings you get from the lower transaction charge on Shopify Plus ($2,000 per month) will make it worth it.


Having Shopify is a great solution for selling online and offline. If you’re only selling offline though, I think Square should still be your primary consideration. However, if you think online sales will be an important channel (as it usually is for most businesses), then I would strongly look at Shopify’s POS solution. Before taking the plunge, I’d start with a small trial, see whether you like the system and then make your decision rather than going all in from the start, especially if you’re operating from many sales locations.
